| Buyer's Guide - Carat | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A Carat, also referred to as a Metric Carat, is a standard unit of weight used to measure gems. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams or 0.2 grams. A Carat can be broken down into smaller units called Points. There are 100 Points in a Carat, so a 0.50 Carat stone can also be said to be a 50 point stone. The weight of a stone in Carats is commonly used to indicate the size of a stone, even though a Carat is technically a measure of mass, not volume. Two diamonds of the same cut and carat weight will always be the same size. But, a diamond and ruby cut the same, with the same carat weight will not be the same size. The ruby will be smaller than the diamond because, rubies have a higher density than diamonds. Emeralds have a lower density, so will appear larger.
The price of diamonds increases exponentially as the size increases. The cost of a 2 Carat diamond will be much greater than twice the cost of a 1 Carat diamond of the same cut, clarity, and color. This is primarily due to the fact that the larger the rough diamond, the more rare it is in nature. We carry a large variety of quality diamonds and gemstones in many different sizes. If you are looking for something special, such as a certain cut in an uncommon size, we may have it in stock. If not, we can order exactly what you want. |
